8) The Hurricane (1999) Denzel Washington was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a top-ranked middleweight who was wrongly convicted of murder. This movie chronicles Carter’s ear;y noxing career and his incarnation until the case was overturned in 1985 after almost 20 years behind bars. 
7) The Champ (1931, remake in 1979) The original is the better of the two movies, but the remake is better remembered. The original starred Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper and won the Oscar for Best Picture in the tear-jerking story of a father staging a comeback to help retain custody of his young son, in the remake. Jon Voight played the title character and was nominated for an Oscar for his performance. Voight’s son in the remake was played by a pre-Silver Spoons Ricky Schroder, who uttered the famous, iconic line “Wake up Champ” in what is considered by many to be one of the most heartbreaking scenes in a sports film.
