4) The Fighter (2010) Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Amy Adams star in this biography of “Irish” Micky Ward, the former welterweight champion. The most interesting aspect of Ward’s story is his crazy family, including his older half-brother, Dickie Ecklund, a former boxer, who once went the distance with Sugar Ray Leonard, but is now battling drug addiction. Leo plays Ward’s mother, who has always favored or older son and has trouble handling her younger son’s success. The Fighter was nominated for Best Picture, and Bale and Leo also won acting Oscars. 3) When We Were Kings (1996) This documentary about the “Rumble in the Jungle”, the 1974 heavyweight title fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Zaire, is nothing short of a masterpiece that is a must for any boxing fan. The documentary focuses a lot on how the fight happened in the first place, the build up and how the country of Zaire responded to it. It also focuses on the controversy surrounding the fight, since it was funded by Mobutu Sese Seko, Zaire’s dictator. It is an amazing look behind the scenes of one of the most famous boxing matches of all-time.
